A Custom of Aloha
The custom of offering a lei as a gift or gesture of welcome was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian voyagers, who arrived in Hawaii around 1000 A.D., navigating the ocean by the stars in large sailing canoes. With these early settlers, the lei tradition in Hawaii was born. Leis were often constructed of flowers, leaves, shells, seeds, nuts, feathers, and even bone in the early days. The tradition has continued to this day and has become symbolic of the Islands and the concept of aloha. Today leis are most often crafted from fragrant flowers, orchids and the popular Maile lei, which represents a gift of honor and respect.
